오늘은 우연히 접한 『우리 동네 씨앗 도서관』이라는 책을 읽고 완주 고산도서관에서 진행 중인 토종씨앗 프로젝트에 대해 소개해드리려고 합니다. 책 한 권이 불러일으킨 영감과 우리 지역의 소중한 자산인 토종씨앗에 대한 이야기, 함께 살펴볼까요?

이 책은 홍성에 살면서 농사를 짓고, 아이들을 가르치고, 씨앗을 지키는 귀한 마음들이 함께 지은 것이다. 지은이를 개인으로 두지 않고 ‘홍성 씨앗 도서관’이라 한 것도 이들 모두가 힘을 모아 도서관을 만들었기 때문이다. 씨앗 도서관을 만들게 된 동기, 활동가 조직, 건립 과정, 씨앗 마실을 통한 씨앗 수집 등을 최초 아이디어 단계부터 차근차근 안내하는 이 책은 씨앗 도서관에서 하는 일을 3개의 장으로 나누어 소개한다. 1부는 책 전체의 인트로라

『우리 동네 씨앗 도서관』, 생명의 씨앗을 지키는 사람들

홍성 씨앗 도서관에서 지은 이 책은 농사를 짓고, 아이들을 가르치며, 씨앗을 지키는 사람들의 이야기를 담고 있습니다. 지은이를 개인으로 두지 않고 '홍성 씨앗 도서관'이라 한 것도 이들 모두가 힘을 모아 도서관을 만들었기 때문이라고 해요.

책은 크게 3부로 구성되어 있는데요:

1. 씨앗 도서관 소개
2. 씨앗 도서관에서 하는 일
3. 외국의 씨앗 도서관 소개

특히 인상 깊었던 부분은 씨앗이 단순한 농사의 재료가 아니라 우리 조상의 지혜와 삶의 이야기가 담긴 문화유산이라는 점이었습니다. 씨앗 하나하나에 우리 할머니들과 어머니들의 역사가 고스란히 담겨 있다는 사실이 마음을 울렸어요.

사라져가는 씨앗의 역사

요즘 사람들은 더 이상 씨앗을 받지 않는다고 합니다. 종묘상에서 사 오거나, 면사무소에서 추천해주는 대로 알이 굵고 벌레가 잘 안 먹는 종자로 바꾼 지 오래라고 해요.

F1 씨앗 육종이 시작되면서 씨앗 받는 일은 농부의 손을 떠나 종묘회사에서 돈을 주고 구입하는 1회용 상품이 되어버렸습니다. 재배 기술도 단작 위주로 바뀌며 단순화되었고, 씨앗 받는 기술은 농가의 기술이 아닌 기업 기술이 되었죠.

농사를 지으려면 땅과 '씨앗'이 필요합니다. 씨앗은 또한 그 자체로 식량이 되는 생명의 원천이기도 합니다. 그런데 이토록 귀중한 씨앗이 무방비 상태로 고갈되고 있다는 사실이 안타깝습니다.

씨앗 도서관의 탄생

홍성의 씨앗 도서관은 2014년부터 '씨앗 도서관'을 만들기 위한 준비 작업으로 홍동면에 있는 14개 마을을 찾아다니며 할머니들께 씨앗을 얻으러 다녔다고 합니다. 이를 '씨앗 마실'이라고 부른다고 해요.

이 마실을 통해 총 열 분의 할머니들을 취재했고, 그분들이 기증한 귀한 씨앗은 이제 도서관에 간직되어 이웃에게 전달되면서 '모두의 씨앗'이 되어갔습니다.

씨앗 도서관은 도서관에서 책을 빌리고 반납하는 것처럼 씨앗을 대출받아 농사를 짓고 씨앗을 반납하는 방식입니다. 특히 유기농법으로 농사를 짓고 채종된 토종 씨앗만이 가능하다고 해요.

완주 고산도서관의 토종씨앗 프로젝트

그런데 반가운 소식! 우리 완주 고산도서관에서도 토종씨앗 관련 프로그램을 운영하고 있다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다.

완주군립 고산도서관은 토종씨앗 알아보기 특화도서관 육성 지원 공모에 선정되어 다양한 프로그램을 진행하고 있어요. 2023년에는 '토종씨앗 깊게 보기! 지구농살림 이야기'라는 프로그램을 운영했는데요, 씨앗과 땅을 살리는 농부와 활동가분들의 다양한 이야기를 나누는 시간이었습니다.

이 프로그램은 사라져가는 소중한 우리의 토종씨앗, 자연과 농부의 달력인 절기, 땅을 갈지 않는 농사 자연농, 다양성이 깃들어있는 퍼머컬처와 공동체, 소농과 소비자를 잇는 농부시장과 꾸러미, 토종과일나무 먹거리 숲, 네추럴 와인과 맥주 등 자연을 닮은 방식으로 농사를 짓고 관계를 이어가는 분들의 이야기를 나누는 자리였습니다.

또한 2022년에는 '도서관이랑 토종씨앗이랑 놀아요' 프로그램을 운영했는데요, 완주군의 토종씨앗 작물들로 김장에 필요한 야채들을 씨앗부터 직접 심어보고 길러내는 활동이었습니다. 수확물은 고산도서관 이용자들과 나누었다고 해요.

토종씨앗의 가치

토종 씨앗의 가치는 무엇일까요? 한 지역에서 30년 이상 자란 토종 씨앗은 우리나라 기후와 풍토에 잘 맞고 병해충에 강합니다. 환경적응력이 뛰어나 유기농 재배에도 적합할 뿐 아니라 건강에도 좋고 종자를 이어서 심을 수 있어 가치가 높다고 합니다.

임진왜란 때 일본에서 처음 들여온 고추는 600년간 맛과 모양이 변화하여 지금은 토종 고추가 50여종에 이른다고 해요. 사람의 다양성이 종자의 다양성으로 구현되어 음성초, 안성고추, 칠성초 등으로 확대됐다고 합니다.

씨앗 도서관 운영 현황

현재 전국에는 수원, 광명, 공주 등 15곳에 씨앗 도서관이 있고, 37군데에서 개관을 준비 중이라고 합니다. 서울식물원에도 씨앗도서관이 있어 씨앗 대출 프로그램을 운영하고 있다고 해요.

씨앗 도서관은 씨앗을 대출하고 전시하는 것뿐만 아니라 강연을 통해 정보교류를 하고 씨앗 정보, 재배 관리 등에 관한 정원 활동에 대한 필요한 부분의 상담도 지원해 준다고 합니다.

우리 고산에서도 가능할까?

『우리 동네 씨앗 도서관』을 읽으며 우리 고산에서도 본격적인 씨앗 도서관을 만들 수 있지 않을까 하는 생각이 들었습니다. 이미 고산도서관에서 토종씨앗 관련 프로그램을 운영하고 있으니, 한 걸음 더 나아가 씨앗 도서관을 만들어 지역의 토종 씨앗을 보존하고 확산하는 데 기여할 수 있을 것 같아요.

고산도서관은 이미 사라져가는 지역 전승문화의 구술을 채록하는 작업을 해본 경험이 있으니, 우리 지역의 할머니, 할아버지들이 간직하고 있는 토종 씨앗과 그에 얽힌 이야기들을 수집하고, 이를 책으로 엮어 후대에 전하는 일도 가능하지 않을까요?

Seeds of Life: The Story of Native Seeds Project at Wanju Gosan Library

Today, I'd like to introduce you to the native seed project at Wanju Gosan Library, inspired by a book I recently read called "Our Neighborhood Seed Library" (우리 동네 씨앗 도서관). Let's explore the inspiration from this book and the story of precious native seeds in our region.

"Our Neighborhood Seed Library," People Protecting Seeds of Life

This book, written by the Hongseong Seed Library, tells the story of people who farm, teach children, and protect seeds. The author is listed as "Hongseong Seed Library" rather than individuals because they all worked together to create the library.

The book is divided into three main parts:

1. Introduction to the Seed Library
2. Activities of the Seed Library
3. Introduction to Foreign Seed Libraries

What impressed me most was learning that seeds are not just farming materials but cultural heritage containing our ancestors' wisdom and life stories. Each seed carries the history of our grandmothers and mothers, which touched my heart.

The Disappearing History of Seeds

People nowadays no longer save seeds. They buy them from seed stores or follow recommendations from local offices to change to varieties with bigger grains that are less susceptible to pests and produce more pods.

Since the introduction of F1 seed breeding, seed saving has left farmers' hands and become a disposable product purchased from seed companies. Cultivation techniques have also been simplified to focus on monoculture, and seed-saving skills have become corporate technology rather than farmers' knowledge.

Farming requires land and 'seeds.' Seeds are also the source of life that becomes food. It's sad that such precious seeds are being depleted without protection.

Birth of the Seed Library

The Hongseong Seed Library began preparations in 2014 by visiting 14 villages in Hongdong-myeon to collect seeds from grandmothers. They called this "Seed Visits."

Through these visits, they interviewed ten grandmothers, and the precious seeds they donated are now preserved in the library and shared with neighbors, becoming "everyone's seeds."

A seed library works like a regular library - you borrow seeds, grow them, and return seeds after harvest. Only native seeds grown using organic farming methods are eligible.

Wanju Gosan Library's Native Seed Project

Great news! I discovered that our Wanju Gosan Library is also running programs related to native seeds.

Wanju Gosan Library was selected for a specialized library development support program focusing on native seeds. In 2023, they ran a program called "Looking Deeply at Native Seeds! Earth Farming Stories," which shared various stories from farmers and activists working to save seeds and soil.

This program covered topics such as precious disappearing native seeds, seasonal farming calendars, natural farming without tilling, permaculture and community diversity, farmers' markets connecting small farmers with consumers, native fruit tree food forests, natural wines and beers, and other stories about farming in harmony with nature.

In 2022, they also ran a program called "Playing with Native Seeds at the Library," where participants planted and grew vegetables needed for kimchi making using Wanju's native seeds. The harvest was shared with Gosan Library users.

The Value of Native Seeds

What is the value of native seeds? Native seeds that have grown in a region for over 30 years are well-adapted to Korea's climate and soil conditions and are resistant to pests and diseases. They have excellent environmental adaptability, are suitable for organic farming, are healthy, and can be replanted season after season.

Peppers first brought from Japan during the Imjin War (1592-1598) have changed in taste and shape over 600 years, resulting in about 50 varieties of native peppers today. Human diversity has manifested in seed diversity, expanding into varieties like Eumseongcho, Anseong pepper, and Chilseongcho.

Current Status of Seed Libraries

Currently, there are seed libraries in 15 locations nationwide, including Suwon, Gwangmyeong, and Gongju, with 37 more preparing to open. The Seoul Botanic Park also has a seed library running a seed lending program.

Seed libraries not only lend and exhibit seeds but also exchange information through lectures and provide consultation on seed information, cultivation management, and garden activities.

Is It Possible in Our Gosan?

While reading "Our Neighborhood Seed Library," I wondered if we could establish a full-fledged seed library in Gosan. Since Gosan Library is already running programs related to native seeds, perhaps we could take a step further and create a seed library to contribute to preserving and spreading local native seeds.

Gosan Library already has experience documenting disappearing local cultural traditions, so perhaps we could also collect native seeds and their stories from our local grandmothers and grandfathers, and compile them into a book for future generations.

Conclusion

Through the infinite possibilities and vitality contained in a single seed, and the stories of the people who have preserved them, we can dream of a better future. "Our Neighborhood Seed Library" will be a valuable guide to making that dream a reality.
