Webtoon Artist Soman's 'Bomi-wa' Series: A Journey of Parenting and Independence

Today, I'd like to tell you about webtoon artist Soman who is active in Donggu, Daejeon. Soman, whose real name is Cheon Jeong-yeon, chose the pen name 'Soman (小滿)' which reflects her desire "to live a simple yet fulfilling life." Her representative work, the 'Bomi-wa' series, has gained much sympathy from many people by honestly portraying parenting and women's lives.

Soman and the 'Bomi-wa' Series

Soman majored in journalism, broadcasting, and visual design. She worked as a teacher at Seongmisan School, as a textbook creator for children in the third world at Babodeulkkot (NGO), and as an activist at Daejeon Women's Association. She began recording her parenting experiences after giving birth to her daughter Bomi in 2016, which became the start of the webtoon 'Bomi-wa'.

"The wonder I felt when Bomi first rolled over is still vivid, and I started drawing comics because I wanted to preserve such moments," says Soman. In 2018, she received startup funding from the Ministry of SMEs and Startups to establish a one-person publishing company called 'Naegagrein' and published the 'Bomi-wa' series.

The 'Bomi-wa' series consists of three volumes, each with a color that holds special meaning:

• Volume 1 (Pink): Subtitled 'Spring Has Come', it captures the meaning of starting to draw from the day her daughter Bomi was born and first rolled over. It contains small but meaningful moments such as Bomi's first smile, refusing baby food, and the emotion of calling "Dad" for the first time.

Soman honestly talks about the difficulties of balancing parenting and creative activities. "Securing time was the hardest. I should sleep when the child sleeps and wake up when the child wakes up, but I sat and drew during that time, which later affected my health," she confessed.

In her work process, she first sketches like brainstorming, then selects important moments, organizes them, and completes them as comics. The 'Bomi-wa' series, born through this process, sincerely captures various aspects of life as a woman, mother, and creator in modern Korean society, beyond just being a parenting diary.

The Message of 'Independence, Not Solo Parenting'

Volume 3, 'Independence, Not Solo Parenting', deeply deals with the issue of household labor. Soman points out that housework and childcare are "24-hour care labor" with no clocking in or out, and are both "physical labor and mental labor." This book meticulously deals with the protagonist's (Bom-mom, Jeong-yeon) existential anxiety during her husband's job loss, the process of transitioning from a full-time housewife to a working mom, and the hardships of balancing work, housework, and childcare as a working mom.

The 'Household Division' chapter of 'Bomi-wa 3', which begins with the question "Is it possible to divide household chores so that no one feels wronged?", was shared more than 200 times on SNS from the start, becoming a hot topic. New Challenge, 'Strike 1932'

Recently, Soman has been drawing a new work called "Strike 1932" about the strike of workers at the Gunsi Silk Factory in Daejeon during the Japanese colonial period. This work was also selected for the Korea Manhwa Contents Agency's '2024 Diversity Comics Support Project'. In March 2025, she participated in a special exhibition at the Daejeon Webtoon Campus, exhibiting her representative work 'Bomi-wa' and her serialized work 'Strike 1932'.

Cultural Experiences in Donggu, Daejeon

Donggu, Daejeon, where Soman is active, operates various cultural experience programs. From May to November 2025, the '2025 Donggu Drone Experience Program' will be operated, with various programs such as coding drone experience class, family drone introduction, family drone intermediate class, and drone intermediate class. Applications can be made on a first-come, first-served basis through the Donggu Lifelong Learning website, and any resident who is in the 4th grade of elementary school or above can participate.
