저자는 귀농과 귀촌의 차이는 사실상 애매하다며 '귀향(歸鄕)'이라는 단어를 소환합니다. 그리고 이렇게 말합니다.

"귀향의 '향'을 달리 해석하면 이런 로컬리티가 남아 있는 곳이다. 태어났던 곳이 아니더라도 로컬리티가 살아 있는 지역에서 새로운 삶을 살아보자는 뜻을 귀향이 담고 있다. 그래서 귀향 디자인은 농촌과 도시를 구별하지 않는다. 로컬리티가 남아 있다면, 로컬리티에 기대 새로운 삶을 찾을 수 있다면 대도시의 골목길에서, 아파트 단지에서도 귀향은 가능하다."

이처럼 저자는 단순히 농촌으로 이주하는 것이 아닌, 자신에게 맞는 '귀향 디자인'을 하도록 권유합니다. 각자에게 주어진 상황에 맞춰 반농반X의 '농'을 디자인하고, 'X'를 디자인할 수 있는 방법을 제시합니다.

반농반X, 본능을 따라 정체성 찾기

'반농반X'는 일본의 시오미 나오키가 제안한 개념으로, 시골로 내려가 일의 절반은 농사로, 나머지 반은 좋아하는 일이나 사회에 보탬이 되는 일을 하면서 사는 삶을 의미합니다.

저자는 "역사 이래로 농촌에 농민만 살았던 것도 아니고 농사만 짓는 농부도 없었다"라고 말합니다. 이는 농사에 대한 막연한 동경이나 환상에서 벗어나, 현실적인 귀농·귀촌의 길을 모색하라는 조언입니다.

우리에게는 본능이 있습니다. 경작본능, 목축본능, 요리본능, 공작본능, 노래하는 본능, 춤추는 본능 등 다양한 본능이 있죠. 이러한 본능에 귀를 기울이고 가슴의 소리를 따라야 비로소 성공적인 귀향이 가능하다는 것이 저자의 메시지입니다.

로컬리티가 살아 숨쉬는 곳

'로컬리티(locality)'는 '삶의 터로서 로컬이라는 공간에 살고 있는 사람들이 시간을 통해 축적한 경험과 다양성의 총체'를 의미합니다. 쉽게 말해 드라마 '동백꽃 필 무렵'을 떠올리면 됩니다.

전라북도 완주군은 로컬푸드의 성공적인 사례로 꼽힙니다. 완주는 '로컬푸드 1번지'로 불리며, '지역에서 난 농산물은 지역에서 모두 소비한다'는 로컬푸드 개념을 2012년 국내에 처음 들여와 전국에 퍼뜨렸습니다. 유엔식량농업기구(FAO)는 완주를 로컬푸드 정책 우수 사례로 선정하며 "대한민국 최초로 사회적 농업정책을 펼쳐 여러 가지 혁신을 낳았다"고 평가했습니다.

퍼머컬처의 가치와 원리

퍼머컬처는 단순한 농법이 아닌 자연의 원리를 이해하고 함께 일하는 생활환경을 디자인하는 체계입니다. 퍼머컬처의 핵심 가치관은 '지구 살림(Earth Care)', '사람 살림(People Care)', 그리고 '공정한 공유(Fair Share)'입니다.

Designing a New Life with Permaculture: A Review of Lim Kyung-soo's Book "Now, Countryside"

Today, I'd like to introduce you to the book "Now, Countryside" by author Lim Kyung-soo. After the pandemic, many people are turning their eyes to regional living away from complex cities, and this book will serve as an excellent guide for those considering returning to rural areas.

Permaculture, Designing a Sustainable Life

"Now, Countryside" is not just a simple guide to returning to farming but a book with the subtitle "Designing Your Return with Permaculture." Permaculture is a compound of "permanent" and "agriculture" or "culture," referring to a design system for creating sustainable agricultural environments.

Author Lim Kyung-soo majored in Environmental Management at Seoul National University and learned permaculture at the Crystal Waters eco-village in Australia. In 2001, he founded the social enterprise "Ijang." Currently, he has established a new "Ijang" cooperative, focusing on resident autonomy and local asset projects.

The New Meaning of Returning Home (Gwihyang)

The author summons the word "Gwihyang (歸鄕)" (returning home), saying that the difference between returning to farming and returning to rural areas is actually ambiguous. He states:

"If you interpret the 'hyang' in Gwihyang differently, it refers to a place where locality remains. Gwihyang contains the meaning of living a new life in a region where locality is alive, even if it's not where you were born. Therefore, designing your return doesn't distinguish between rural and urban areas. If locality remains, if you can find a new life based on locality, then returning home is possible even in the alleys of big cities or apartment complexes."

The author encourages not simply moving to rural areas but designing a "return home" that suits you. He suggests designing the "farming" part of "half-farming, half-X" and the "X" part according to each person's situation.

Half-Farming, Half-X, Finding Identity by Following Instinct

"Half-farming, half-X" is a concept proposed by Japan's Shiomi Naoki, referring to a life where half of your work is farming and the other half is doing what you like or contributing to society while living in the countryside.

The author says, "Throughout history, not only farmers lived in rural areas, and there were no farmers who only farmed." This is advice to move away from vague yearnings or fantasies about farming and seek a realistic path to returning to farming or rural areas.

We have instincts: cultivation instinct, livestock instinct, cooking instinct, crafting instinct, singing instinct, dancing instinct, and more. The author's message is that only by listening to these instincts and following your heart's voice can you successfully return home.

Where Locality Breathes

"Locality" means "the totality of experiences and diversity accumulated over time by people living in a local space as their living ground." Simply put, think of the drama "When the Camellia Blooms."

Wanju-gun in Jeollabuk-do is cited as a successful case of local food. Wanju is called the "No. 1 place for local food," and it was the first to introduce the concept of local food in Korea in 2012, spreading it nationwide. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) selected Wanju as an excellent case of local food policy, evaluating that "it was the first in Korea to implement social agricultural policies, bringing about various innovations."

The Values and Principles of Permaculture

Permaculture is not just a farming method but a system for designing living environments that understand and work with nature's principles. The core values of permaculture are "Earth Care," "People Care," and "Fair Share."

Permaculture design principles include "observe and interact," "store energy," "create harvest/profit," "use renewable resources," "reduce waste," "design from patterns to details," "integrate rather than separate," "use small and slow solutions," and "use and value diversity."

These principles contain wisdom that can be applied not only to agriculture but also to our daily lives.

The Charm of Wanju-gun

Wanju-gun boasts clean natural environments and air, and beautiful scenery represented by the Mangyeong River and Ansu Mountain. Especially, the scenery of the Mangyeong River embankment path leaves an impressive memory for many people.

The charms of Wanju-gun include:

• Clean natural environment and good air
• A community that is not complicated but has the necessary people
• Various infrastructure just a 20-minute drive away (such as Jeonju)
• Access to local food and clean ingredients

If you visit Wanju, I recommend the Gosan Natural Recreation Forest. Also, Wanju, which is recently emerging as a hot place on SNS, has tens of thousands of posts with hashtags like "#WanjuTravel" and "#AwonGotaek" on Instagram, and is becoming a new regional travel destination and resort for the MZ generation.
