Have you ever participated in a book club? Today, I'd like to introduce you to a special reading group active in Wanju, Jeollabuk-do, called 'Book Reading Farmer' (abbreviated as 'Chaekdong'). This group is a grassroots reading club where local farmers gather to read books and contemplate real-world issues, particularly reading Green Review together and engaging in deep conversations about agriculture, ecology, and social issues.

Wanju County's Reading Culture Support Policy

First, I have some good news to share! Wanju County is promoting the revitalization of local reading culture through its 2025 reading group operation support project. This year, they plan to support approximately 18 reading groups, with support amounts varying from 800,000 to 1 million won depending on evaluation criteria. Please note that at least 10% of the funding must be self-funded!

Wanju County continued active operations with 13 reading groups last year and has expanded the scale of this year's project due to high participant satisfaction and achievements. Support includes purchasing books for reading group discussions, capacity-building programs and education, and providing activity spaces within libraries.

Eligible applicants are reading group organizations planning to base their activities in Wanju County libraries, with at least 5 members who operate regular reading groups at least once a month. Additionally, at least 70% of members must be Wanju County residents or work in Wanju County, and the organization must be able to cooperate in promoting reading group activities.

The Direction of the 'Book Reading Farmer' Group

One member who participated in the meeting shares their farming experience in Geumsan, expressing how difficult it was to farm without pesticides on 800 pyeong of land. Nevertheless, they say they gain comfort and courage by meeting people with the same concerns through such gatherings.
