한지 제작의 10단계 여정

1. 닥나무 거두기와 째기(닥무지): 가을부터 초겨울에 걸쳐 수확한 닥나무를 모아 분류하는 과정입니다. 닥나무를 모아둔 곳을 '닥무지'라고 합니다.
2. 껍질 벗기기: 증기로 쪄낸 닥나무의 껍질을 한 겹씩 벗겨내는 과정입니다. 이때 닥나무를 약 10시간 이상 찌면 껍질이 쉽게 분리됩니다.
3. 흑피 벗기기: 닥나무 껍질의 겉층인 흑피를 제거하고 속껍질인 백피만 남기는 과정입니다. 이 백피가 한지의 주원료가 됩니다.
4. 닥 삶기: 백피를 물에 불린 후 삼나무 재와 소다를 넣고 4-5시간 동안 삶아 불필요한 성분을 제거하고 순수한 섬유질만 남깁니다.
5. 티 고르기(티 잡기): 백피 속의 이물질과 불순물을 하나하나 손으로 제거하는 정성이 필요한 과정입니다.

The representative Hanji craftsman of Daeseung Hanji Village is 75-year-old Master Kim Han-seop. Born in Bugwi-myeon, Jinan, North Jeolla Province, he coincidentally formed a connection with the Hanji factory in Daeseung Village, Wanju after his military service in 1973, which became his lifelong profession.

Master Kim is an artisan who has mastered all processes of Hanji manufacturing, with the amazing skill of consistently producing sheets of Hanji with identical weight. His determination to "dedicate his life to restoring traditional Hanji" played a significant role in creating the 12,000 pyeong (approximately 39,600 square meters) paper mulberry plantation in Daeseung Hanji Village.

The 10 Stages of Hanji Production

The intricate miniature figurines displayed in the museum vividly show the entire process of Hanji production. Let's examine what work takes place at each stage:

1. Harvesting and Cutting Paper Mulberry: The process of collecting and classifying paper mulberry harvested from autumn to early winter. The place where paper mulberry is gathered is called 'Dakmuji'.
2. Peeling the Bark: The process of peeling the bark of steamed paper mulberry layer by layer. Steaming the paper mulberry for more than 10 hours makes the bark separate easily.
3. Removing the Outer Bark: The process of removing the outer layer of the bark (black bark) and leaving only the inner bark (white bark). This white bark becomes the main raw material for Hanji.
4. Boiling the Bark: After soaking the white bark in water, it is boiled with cedar ash and soda for 4-5 hours to remove unnecessary components and leave only pure fiber.
5. Sorting Impurities: A process requiring dedication to remove foreign matter and impurities from the white bark by hand.
6. Beating the Fiber: The work of beating the softened white bark with a mallet to evenly loosen the fibers. This process increases the density and strength of the paper.
7. Paper Forming: The key stage of Hanji production, where mucilage extracted from the roots of Hibiscus manihot is mixed to help the mulberry fibers spread evenly, then scooped up with a bamboo screen to form a sheet of paper.
8. Draining Water: Stacking the formed paper sheets and applying pressure to drain water and adjust the thickness and density of the paper.
9. Drying: The process of natural drying by attaching wet paper sheets one by one to a wall. Through this process, the paper becomes even stronger.
10. Finishing (Dochim): The final work of beating the completed Hanji to smooth the surface and increase durability.

Daeseung Hanji Village: Where Tradition Meets Modernity

Daeseung Hanji Village is the birthplace of Goryeo paper, which was world-renowned, and has maintained artisan-level Hanji production techniques with clear water and paper mulberry cultivation for over 400 years.
