단오에는 다양한 전통 풍습이 있습니다. 여성들은 창포를 삶은 물에 머리를 감는 '단오장'을 하고 창포 뿌리로 만든 비녀를 꽂았으며, 그네뛰기를 즐겼습니다. 남성들은 씨름을 통해 힘을 겨루었습니다. 또한 단오 무렵에는 더위가 시작되기 때문에 부채를 선물하는 풍습도 있었습니다.

"오월 단오 안에는 못 먹는 풀이 없다"는 속담처럼 양기를 받아 자란 풀은 건강에 좋다고 여겨, 쑥과 익모초를 뜯어 약으로 사용하고 수리취떡, 앵두화채 등의 음식을 즐겼습니다.

단오놀이의 매력

그네뛰기의 경우, 재미로 타기도 했지만 높이 뛰는 사람을 가리는 경기를 하기도 했습니다. 그네뛰기대회를 열어 가장 높이 뛴 사람에게 노리개나 비단, 포목 등의 상품을 주기도 했답니다.

널뛰기는 단오뿐만 아니라 명절 때 부녀자들이 하던 놀이로, 지금의 시소와 비슷합니다. 긴 널빤지의 한 가운데에 짚단이나 가마니로 밑을 괴고, 양쪽 끝에 한 사람씩 마주 서서 번갈아가며 널을 뛰는 놀이입니다. 개인전, 단체전 다양하게 편을 나눠서 했다고 합니다. 앉아서 타는 시소와 달리 뛰면서 균형을 잡아야 하니 정말 중요했겠죠?

이 놀이에는 속신(俗信)이 있는데, 정초에 널뛰기를 하면 일 년 내내 가시에 찔리지 않다고 합니다. 그리고 처녀 때 널뛰기를 하지 않으면 결혼 후 아이를 갖지 못한다고 믿기도 했답니다.

2025 Dano Festival: A Celebration Where Tradition Meets Modernity

Immerse yourself in the charm of this festival where you can experience the wisdom and traditions of our ancestors on the day when yang energy is at its strongest!

Dano, Our Precious Cultural Heritage

Dano falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. The term 'Dan (端)' means first, and 'o (午)' means five, so it literally means 'the first fifth day.' Since ancient times, our ancestors considered odd numbers as yang (陽) numbers and regarded them as auspicious. Particularly, Dano was considered one of the three major holidays along with Lunar New Year and Chuseok, as it was believed to be the day when yang energy is most vigorous throughout the year.

There are several theories about the origin of Dano, with the story related to the loyal subject Qu Yuan of the Chu Kingdom in China being widely known. However, records indicate that in Korea, there was already a custom of offering sacrifices to heaven and enjoying songs and dances after sowing seeds in May during the Three Han Period, which was called 'Surit-nal.' Dano is our unique holiday that prays for abundance after completing spring farming and is deeply related to agricultural culture.

Introduction to the 2025 Bountiful Harvest Dano Festival

This Dano Festival marks its 19th anniversary this year, making it a meaningful village celebration. It will be an opportunity for the local community and schools to come together to experience traditional culture and communicate across generations.

Traditional Customs and Experiences of Dano

Dano features various traditional customs. Women would wash their hair in water boiled with iris roots, known as 'Danojang,' wear hairpins made from iris roots, and enjoy swinging. Men would compete in traditional Korean wrestling (ssireum). Also, as the heat begins around Dano, there was a custom of giving fans as gifts.

As the saying goes, "In May's Dano, there is no inedible grass," plants that received yang energy were considered good for health. People would pick mugwort and motherwort to use as medicine and enjoy foods like surichwi rice cakes and cherry punch.

The Charm of Dano Games

In the case of swinging, people not only enjoyed it for fun but also held competitions to determine who could swing the highest. Swinging competitions were held, and prizes such as ornaments, silk, or cloth were given to those who swung the highest.

Seesaw jumping was a game played by women not only during Dano but also during other holidays, similar to today's seesaw. A long board was propped up in the middle with straw bundles or sacks, and one person stood at each end, taking turns jumping on the board. They played in various forms, including individual and team competitions. Unlike sitting on a seesaw, they had to maintain balance while jumping, which must have been quite challenging!

There is a folk belief associated with this game: if you play seesaw jumping at the beginning of the year, you won't be pricked by thorns all year long. It was also believed that if a maiden didn't play seesaw jumping, she wouldn't be able to have children after marriage.

The Meaning and Modern Value of Dano

Dano carries the meaning of praying for a bountiful harvest after completing rice planting in early summer, before the hot summer arrives. Through this event, we hope to experience our precious cultural heritage together, enhance community consciousness, and create opportunities for intergenerational communication.

Especially in today's busy modern society, taking a moment to reflect on our traditions is very precious. For children, it will be a living educational field where they can directly experience the traditional culture they've only seen in textbooks, and for the elderly, it will be a meaningful time to revive memories.
