박현정 씨의 고산 정착 이야기

"안녕하세요, 저는 고산에서 차와 사람과 함께 살고 있는 박현정입니다."

지유명차의 주인 박현정 씨는 원래 전주에 살다가 2011년에 완주 고산으로 이주했습니다. 그러나 그 이전인 2008년부터 자신의 아이를 고산의 삼우초등학교에 보내기 시작했다고 합니다. 당시에는 삼우초가 바깥에서 크게 알려지지 않았던 시절이었죠.

"시골 학교에서 아이들 좀 놀려보자라고 사람들을 많이 꼬셔 가지고 열몇 명을 모아서 출퇴근을 통학을 시켜가면서 학교를 4년 동안 보냈어요."

약 4년간 전주에서 30분 거리를 통학시키다가 결국 고산에 땅을 구해 2012년 2월부터 본격적으로 정착하게 되었습니다. 처음에는 은용마을이라고 하는 창포마을의 경로당을 얻어 6개월 살다가 늦게서야 땅을 얻어 집을 지었다고 합니다.

교육을 통한 지역 활성화

박현정 씨는 교육을 통한 지역 활성화에 큰 관심을 가졌습니다. 당시 고산 지역의 아이들은 초등학교 졸업 후 대부분 전주로 진학했는데, 그녀는 지역 내 중학교까지 보내자는 운동을 펼쳤습니다.

"초등학교까지 놀리고 싶었는데, 그때만 해도 이 동네 아이들이 다 초등학교 졸업 후에 고산중에 가지 않고 다 전주로 5학년 때부터 나가던 시절이었거든요."

이후 고등학교까지 확장하려 했으나, 당시 고산고등학교의 상황이 좋지 않았습니다. 고산고는 300명 정도의 일반 인문계 고등학교였지만, 대부분 다른 학교에서 떨어진 학생들이 오는 곳이었고, 학생들은 졸업장만을 목표로 하는 상황이었습니다.

"300명 중에 전북대를 한두 명을 가면 만해요. 그 아이들한테는 이미 고산고가 상처인 거예요. 자기네 동네에서 학교를 가지 못하고 떨어져서 다른 데를 다니는 거니까."

이런 환경을 개선하기 위해 박현정 씨와 지역 주민들은 고등학교 학생들과 함께 다양한 활동을 시작했습니다. 결정적인 변화는 전라북도의 대안 중학교가 고등학교를 설립하려 할 때 지역 주민들이 고산에 유치한 것이었습니다.

"교육감님이 '이 동네 아이들 3분의 1, 대안학교를 오고 싶어하는 아이들 3분의 1, 그리고 도움이 필요한 아이들 3분의 1'로 입학 전형을 실시하자고 했어요."

이는 큰 성공을 거두었고, 현재 고산고는 대안학교로 변모하여 지역의 자랑이 되었습니다.

삼우초등학교의 특별한 교육

삼우초등학교는 2003년 삼기초등학교와 고산서초등학교가 통합되어 설립되었습니다. 현재의 교사(校舍)는 2006년에 완공되었으며, 일반적인 직선형이 아닌 타원형 구조로 설계되어 있어 외관에서부터 다른 학교와 차별화됩니다.

"삼우"라는 학교 이름은 삼기초등학교의 "삼"과 고산서초등학교가 위치한 어우리에서 "우"가 합쳐져 만들어졌으며, 두 학교의 역사를 전승하겠다는 의지가 담겨 있습니다.

이 학교는 2018년에 전북농악 전승학교로 지정되어 3학년부터 6학년까지 전체 학생들을 대상으로 매주 농악 수업을 진행하고 있어 지역 문화 보존에도 기여하고 있습니다.

지유명차와 지역 커뮤니티 공간

2013-2014년경 고산 미소시장이 생기면서, 박현정 씨는 지역 학부모들이 만날 수 있는 공간이 필요하다고 느꼈습니다.

"그때는 고래면옥이나 마학 같은 모임 장소가 없었어요. 그러다 보니 만날 곳이 없으니까 각자의 집을 돌아다니면서 회의를 해야 했는데 보통 힘든 게 아니잖아요."

이런 필요에 의해 카페를 시작하게 되었고, 이 공간은 단순한 카페를 넘어 모임, 회의, 물건 교환, 공연, 강연, 영화 상영 등 다양한 활동이 이루어지는 지역 커뮤니티의 중심 공간이 되었습니다.

"이 공간에서 그런 모임, 회의가 너무 필요했으니까 물건도 맡겨놓고 서로 주고받고, 공연, 강연, 영화도 보고 이게 시작됐던 것이고..."

카페를 중심으로 '이웃린'이라는 모임을 만들어 다양한 지원 사업도 받고, 유명 예술가들의 전시회도 열었습니다. 또한 한 청년이 천연 발효 빵을 만들어 지역 아이들을 위한 기금을 마련하는 사업도 진행했습니다.

보이차와의 인연

지유명차는 단순한 카페가 아닌 보이차 전문점입니다. 박현정 씨는 차를 통해 사람들과 소통하고, 차 문화를 전파하는 역할도 하고 있습니다.

"차를 마시면서 제 몸에 나쁜 것들이 빠져나간다는 걸 알게 됐고, 술과 담배를 동시에 끊는 일들이 생겼어요."

지유명차는 단순히 차를 판매하는 곳이 아니라, 차를 통해 사람들의 건강과 삶의 질을 향상시키는 공간으로 자리 잡고 있습니다.

현재의 지유명차

약 8년 정도 카페를 운영하다가, 박현정 씨는 이제 지역에 다양한 공간들이 생겨나고 있음을 보고 의도적으로 한 발 물러나 쉬어가는 시간을 갖기로 했습니다.

"더 이상 앞서나가는 일에 대한 것이 굳이 필요 없겠다고 생각했어요. 왜냐면 다 생겼으니까. 그곳에서 또 자기들이 열심히 시작하는 거잖아요. 그래서 좀 쉬어가야 되겠다는 생각에 접점을 찍은 거죠."

현재 지유명차는 차와 함께 맛있는 아이스크림을 제공하며, 그녀는 이제 마을을 바라보고 이야기를 듣는 방식으로 지역과 소통하고 있습니다.

최근에는 공간 내에 건식 난방을 설치해 요가 수업을 할 수 있는 공간으로 변모시키려는 계획을 가지고 있습니다.

"카페가 있으면 좋겠다 했을 때 카페가 생겼듯이, 꿈꾸는 것들이 현실이 되는 경험을 해왔어요."

고산 지역의 자랑거리

박현정 씨가 추천하는 고산 지역의 맛집으로는 소연식당, 동락가든 등이 있습니다. 그녀는 고산을 방문하는 사람들에게 "뒹굴뒹굴" 편안하게 쉬어가길 권합니다.

"우리 동네에서 사람들이 좀 뒹굴뒹굴 했으면 좋겠어요. 편안하게 좋은 숙소에서 뒹굴뒹굴하고, 천천히 걸으면서 생각하면서... 쉼과 충전의 모티브를 여기에서 얻어 가면 좋겠어요."

단순히 관광지를 찍고 다니는 여행이 아니라, 좋은 숙소에서 편안하게 머물며 슬리퍼를 끌고 산책하면서 동네를 바라보는 여행을 추천합니다. 골목골목에서 "이 집에서는 어떤 사람들이 어떻게 살고 있을까"라는 상상을 하며 걷는 즐거움을 느낄 수 있는 곳이 바로 고산이라고 말합니다.

청촌방앗간: 고산의 또 다른 커뮤니티 공간

고산에는 지유명차 외에도 청년들의 공간인 '청촌방앗간'이 있습니다. '청년들의 촌살이를 응원하는 방앗간'이라는 뜻을 담은 이 공간은 고산의 사람과 사람을 연결하며 지역의 작은 문화들을 일구어 가고 있습니다.

청촌방앗간에서는 한 달에 한 번, 손맛 좋은 청년이 준비한 식사를 함께 먹으며 고산살이에 대해 나누는 '방앗간 식탁'부터, 고산 주민들의 오프라인 당근마켓인 '되살림장터' 등 다양한 프로그램이 열립니다.

가장 인기 있는 프로그램은 '고산비책'으로, 고산의 주민들이 직접 고산살이에 대한 경험을 나누는 강연입니다. 박현정 씨도 이곳에서 강연을 했다고 합니다.

"고산에는 특별한 이야기를 가지신 분들이 매우 많아요. 예를 들어 미소시장 근처에서 지유명차라는 찻집을 운영하고 계신 현정쌤은 고산 귀농·귀촌 1세대시거든요. 10년 동안 고산의 여러 마을공동체에서 활동하셨기도 하고, 지금은 고산의 사랑방과도 같은 찻집을 운영하고 계시니 고산에 대해 모르는 게 없으시죠."

Jiyumyungcha, the Village Salon of Gosan: Stories and Recommended Restaurants in Wanju Gosan

Today, I'd like to tell you about a special place called 'Jiyumyungcha' located in Gosan-myeon, Wanju-gun, and the stories surrounding it. This place, which I learned about through the 'Godadam' content of Wanju Media Center, is not just a tea shop but a space filled with the history and stories of the village.

Park Hyun-jung's Story of Settling in Gosan

"Hello, I'm Park Hyun-jung, living with tea and people in Gosan."

The owner of Jiyumyungcha, Park Hyun-jung, originally lived in Jeonju and moved to Gosan, Wanju in 2011. However, she started sending her child to Samwoo Elementary School in Gosan as early as 2008. At that time, Samwoo Elementary was not well-known outside the area.

"I persuaded many people to let their children play in a rural school, gathered about a dozen children, and commuted to school for 4 years."

After commuting for about 4 years from Jeonju, which was a 30-minute drive away, she finally acquired land in Gosan and settled there in February 2012. Initially, she lived in a senior center in Eun-yong Village, also known as Changpo Village, for 6 months before eventually getting land and building a house.

Revitalizing the Region Through Education

Park Hyun-jung was very interested in revitalizing the region through education. At that time, most children in the Gosan area went to Jeonju after graduating from elementary school, but she campaigned to send them to middle school within the region.

"I wanted to keep them in elementary school, but back then, all the children in this neighborhood didn't go to Gosan Middle School after graduating from elementary school, they all left for Jeonju from the 5th grade."

She later tried to expand to high school, but the situation at Gosan High School was not good at that time. Gosan High was a general academic high school with about 300 students, but most of them were students who had failed to get into other schools, and the students were just aiming for a diploma.

"Out of 300 students, if one or two go to Jeonbuk National University, that's a lot. For those kids, Gosan High is already a wound. They're going to a different place because they couldn't go to school in their own neighborhood."

To improve this environment, Park Hyun-jung and local residents started various activities with high school students. The decisive change came when local residents attracted an alternative middle school in Jeollabuk-do to establish a high school in Gosan.

"The Superintendent of Education said, 'Let's conduct an admission screening with one-third of the children from this neighborhood, one-third of the children who want to go to an alternative school, and one-third of the children who need help.'"

This was a great success, and now Gosan High has transformed into an alternative school and has become the pride of the region.

The Special Education of Samwoo Elementary School

Samwoo Elementary School was established in 2003 through the integration of Samgi Elementary School and Gosan Seo Elementary School. The current school building was completed in 2006, and it is designed with an oval structure rather than a typical linear one, differentiating it from other schools from the exterior.

The school name "Samwoo" is a combination of "Sam" from Samgi Elementary School and "Woo" from Eo-u-ri, where Gosan Seo Elementary School was located, and it contains the will to carry on the history of both schools.

This school was designated as a Jeonbuk Nongak (traditional Korean farmers' music) transmission school in 2018, and it conducts weekly Nongak classes for all students from 3rd to 6th grade, contributing to the preservation of local culture.

Jiyumyungcha and the Local Community Space

When the Gosan Miso Market was established around 2013-2014, Park Hyun-jung felt the need for a space where local parents could meet.

"At that time, there were no meeting places like Gorae Myeonok or Mahak. So, we had to go around to each other's houses to have meetings, which was not easy."

Due to this need, she started a cafe, and this space became more than just a cafe; it became the center of the local community where various activities such as gatherings, meetings, exchanges of goods, performances, lectures, and movie screenings took place.

"In this space, such gatherings and meetings were so necessary, so we started leaving things, exchanging them, watching performances, lectures, and movies..."

She created a group called 'Neighbor Lin' centered around the cafe, received various support projects, and held exhibitions by famous artists. There was also a project where a young person made naturally fermented bread to raise funds for local children.

The Connection with Pu-erh Tea

Jiyumyungcha is not just a cafe but a specialized Pu-erh tea shop. Park Hyun-jung also plays a role in communicating with people through tea and spreading tea culture.

"I realized that bad things were leaving my body as I drank tea, and I ended up quitting alcohol and smoking at the same time."

Jiyumyungcha is not just a place that sells tea, but a space that has established itself as a place to improve people's health and quality of life through tea.

Jiyumyungcha Today

After running the cafe for about 8 years, Park Hyun-jung decided to intentionally take a step back and take a break as she saw various spaces emerging in the region.

"I thought there was no need to keep leading anymore. Because everything has been created. They are also starting to work hard there. So I decided to take a break."

Currently, Jiyumyungcha offers delicious ice cream along with tea, and she now communicates with the region by observing the village and listening to stories.

Recently, she has plans to transform the space into a place where yoga classes can be held by installing dry heating.

"Just as a cafe was created when I wished for one, I've experienced my dreams becoming reality."

The Pride of Gosan Region

Park Hyun-jung recommends restaurants in the Gosan area such as Soyeon Restaurant and Donglak Garden. She advises visitors to Gosan to relax comfortably and "roll around."

"I wish people would roll around a bit in our neighborhood. Comfortably roll around in a nice accommodation, walk slowly while thinking... I hope they get a motive for rest and recharge from here."

She recommends not just a trip to visit tourist spots, but a journey where you stay comfortably in a nice accommodation, walk around in slippers, and look at the neighborhood. She says that Gosan is a place where you can feel the joy of walking and imagining "what kind of people live in this house and how they live" in every alley.

Cheongchon Bangatgan: Another Community Space in Gosan

In addition to Jiyumyungcha, there is also a space for young people in Gosan called 'Cheongchon Bangatgan'. This space, which means 'a mill that supports young people's rural life', connects people in Gosan and cultivates small cultures in the region.

At Cheongchon Bangatgan, various programs are held, from 'Bangatgan Table', where once a month, a young person with good cooking skills prepares a meal and shares about life in Gosan, to 'Revitalization Market', an offline Danggeun Market for Gosan residents.

The most popular program is 'Gosan Bichaek', a lecture where residents of Gosan directly share their experiences of living in Gosan. Park Hyun-jung also gave a lecture here.

"There are many people with special stories in Gosan. For example, Teacher Hyun-jung, who runs a tea house called Jiyumyungcha near Miso Market, is the first generation of returning farmers in Gosan. She has been active in various village communities in Gosan for 10 years, and now she runs a tea house that is like a village salon in Gosan, so she knows everything about Gosan."

In this way, Gosan connects people through various community spaces and creates culture and stories in the region.
