완연한 봄기운이 느껴지는 5월이 다가왔습니다. 오늘은 5월에 관련된 우리가 잘 알고 있다고 생각하지만, 사실은 잘 모르고 있던 이야기를 나눠보려고 합니다. 특히 5월은 광주민주화운동을 기억하는 달이기도 하죠. 그와 관련된 노래, '임을 위한 행진곡'에 관한 흥미로운 사실을 알려드리겠습니다.

'임을 위한 행진곡'의 진짜 가사는?

"사랑도 명예도 이름도 남김없이
한평생 나가자던 뜨거운 맹세
동지는 간데없고 깃발만 나부껴
새날이 올 때까지 흔들리지 말자"

우리에게 너무나 익숙한 이 노래, '임을 위한 행진곡'은 1980년 5·18 광주민주화운동을 추모하는 노래이자 한국 민주화운동을 대표하는 민중가요입니다. 이 노래는 전 세계 자유항쟁의 현장에서도 불리고 있는데요.

그런데 여러분, 이 노래의 후렴구에서 "앞서서 나가니 산 자여 따르라"라고 부르고 계시진 않나요? 사실 원래 가사는 "앞서서 가나니 산 자여 따르라"입니다. '나가니'가 아니라 '가나니'인 것이죠!

왜 '가나니'인가?

이 노래는 1981년 5월, 백기완의 미발표 장시 「묏비나리」(1980)의 한 부분을 차용하여 소설가 황석영이 가사를 짓고, 전남대 출신 김종률이 곡을 붙인 것입니다.

특히 주목할 점은 이 노래가 단순한 투쟁가가 아니라는 것입니다. '임을 위한 행진곡'은 5·18 광주민주화운동 중 희생된 윤상원과 노동운동가 박기순의 영혼결혼식을 위해 만들어진 노래입니다. 1982년 2월 두 사람의 유해를 광주 망월동 공동묘지(현 국립 5·18 민주 묘지)에 합장하면서 영혼결혼식을 거행할 때 처음 공개되었죠.

그래서 "앞서서 가나니"라는 표현은 먼저 세상을 떠난 사람이 산 자들에게 보내는 메시지입니다. '가나니'는 '가다'의 현재진행형으로, 먼저 간 이들이 길을 열어주니 살아남은 사람들이 그 뒤를 따르라는 의미를 담고 있습니다.

원작 시와 노래 가사의 차이

백기완의 원작 시 「묏비나리」의 해당 부분은 다음과 같습니다:

"사랑도 명예도 이름도 남김없이
한 평생 나가자던 뜨거운 맹세
싸움은 용감했어도 깃발은 찢어져
세월은 흘러가도 구비치는 강물은 안다
갈대마저 일어나 소리치는 끝없는 함성

이 시를 황석영이 노래 가사로 편집하면서 일부 변형이 있었고, 또 구전 과정에서 '가나니'가 '나가니'로 바뀌어 불리게 된 것입니다.

노래의 역사적 의미

이 노래는 처음에는 〈님을 위한 행진곡〉으로 알려졌으나, 최근에는 표준어 규정에 따라 통상 〈임을 위한 행진곡〉이라고 부릅니다. 1981년에 만들어진 이 노래는 오랫동안 금지곡으로 지정됐다가 1997년 김대중 정부에서 5·18 광주민주화운동이 공식 국가기념일로 지정되면서 금지곡에서 해제됐습니다.

작곡자의 원래 의도

작곡자 김종률은 2008년 5월 《님을 위한 행진곡》이라는 음반을 발표하면서 원래 가사를 복원하려고 노력했습니다. 그가 의도한 원래 가사는 다음과 같습니다:

May's Truth: The Hidden Lyrics and Misunderstandings of 'March for the Beloved'

May is the month when we remember the Gwangju Democratic Movement, and I'd like to tell you about an interesting fact regarding the song 'March for the Beloved' (Im-eul Wihan Haengjingok).

What are the real lyrics of 'March for the Beloved'?

"Without leaving behind love, honor, or name
A passionate pledge to go through life
Comrades are gone and only flags wave
Let's not waver until the new day comes"

This song, 'March for the Beloved,' so familiar to us, commemorates the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Movement of 1980 and represents Korea's democratic movement. It's also sung at freedom struggle sites around the world.

But are you singing the chorus as "Apseo-seo nagani san jayo ttareura" (As I go forward, living ones, follow)? The original lyrics are actually "Apseo-seo ganani san jayo ttareura" (As I go ahead, living ones, follow)! It's 'ganani,' not 'nagani'!

Why 'ganani'?

This song was created in May 1981, with lyrics by novelist Hwang Sok-yong who adapted part of Baek Ki-wan's unpublished long poem "Motbinari" (1980), and music by Kim Jong-ryul, a Chonnam National University graduate.

Notably, this song is not just a protest song. 'March for the Beloved' was created for the spiritual wedding ceremony of Yoon Sang-won, who was killed during the Gwangju Democratic Movement, and Park Ki-soon, a labor activist. It was first publicly performed in February 1982 during their spiritual wedding ceremony when their remains were buried together at Gwangju Mangwol-dong Cemetery (now the National May 18 Democratic Cemetery).

Therefore, the expression "Apseo-seo ganani" is a message from those who have left this world to those who remain. 'Ganani' is the present progressive form of 'to go,' meaning that those who have gone ahead are paving the way, and the survivors should follow.

Differences between the original poem and song lyrics

The relevant part of Baek Ki-wan's original poem "Motbinari" is as follows:

"Without leaving behind love, honor, or name
A passionate pledge to go through life
Though the fight was brave, the flag is torn
Though time flows, the winding river knows
Even the reeds rise up and shout endless cries
Rise up, rise up, shouts the blood-clotted cry
As I go ahead, living ones, follow
Living ones, follow"

When Hwang Sok-yong edited this poem into song lyrics, there were some modifications, and during oral transmission, 'ganani' was changed to 'nagani.'

Historical significance of the song

This song was initially known as 'Nim-eul Wihan Haengjingok,' but recently it's commonly called 'Im-eul Wihan Haengjingok' according to standard language regulations. Created in 1981, it was banned for a long time but was released from the ban in 1997 when the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Movement was designated as an official national memorial day during the Kim Dae-jung administration.

Notably, at the 45th anniversary ceremony of the May 18 Democratic Movement in 2025, everyone, regardless of political affiliation, will sing this song together. This has become an important symbol of national unity.

The composer's original intention

When composer Kim Jong-ryul released an album titled 'Nim-eul Wihan Haengjingok' in May 2008, he tried to restore the original lyrics. His intended original lyrics are as follows:

"Without leaving behind love, honor, or name
A passionate pledge to go through life
Comrades are gone and only flags wave
Let's not waver until the new day comes
Though time flows, the mountains and rivers know
Going ahead, going ahead"
