History and Meaning of Changnyongmun
Changnyongmun is a major gate located on the eastern side of Hwaseong Fortress, built from May 8 to October 17, 1795, during the 19th year of King Jeongjo’s reign. The name ‘Changnyong’ refers to the blue dragon in feng shui principles, symbolically protecting the eastern direction.
Hwaseong Fortress was constructed from 1794 to 1796 under King Jeongjo’s orders to honor his father, Prince Sado, and house his remains. Additionally, King Jeongjo had plans to move the capital from Seoul to Suwon. Suwon was strategically positioned to connect Seoul with the West Sea (Yellow Sea) and China.
Architectural Features of Changnyongmun
Changnyongmun is a single-story wooden structure built on a stone base. Its most distinctive feature is the semicircular defensive facility (ongseong), which unlike Janganmun or Paldalmun, has one side open.
The gate features a tall stone archway in the center and a semicircular wall designed as the primary line of defense. It also has a double arch connecting the outer and inner walls, showcasing the advanced architectural techniques of Joseon Korea.
Unlike other gates, many of the engravings on Changnyongmun’s nameplate remain largely intact, adding to its historical value. Unfortunately, the gate was severely damaged during the Korean War but was meticulously restored in 1975 to its current state.
Defensive Structures Around Changnyongmun
Various defensive structures around Changnyongmun demonstrate the military function of Hwaseong Fortress. The Dongbuk Nodae (Northeast Crossbow Platform) is one of two such platforms in the fortress, located near the east gate and positioned at a corner of the wall, allowing archers to target attackers from multiple angles.
Additionally, the Dongbuk Gongsimdon (Northeast Observation Tower) is situated beside Changnyongmun, with an oval structure consisting of three stories and standing 6.8 meters tall. It has an internal spiral staircase leading to the roof. These platforms and observation towers were completely new features not seen in previous fortress structures.
World Heritage Value of Hwaseong Fortress
Hwaseong Fortress was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. It represents the pinnacle of 18th-century military architecture, incorporating the best scientific ideas from Europe and East Asia brought together through careful study by scholars from the School of Practical Learning.
More importantly, the fortress had a significant influence on the development of Korean architecture, urban planning, landscaping, and related arts. The Koreans combined traditional fortress-building methods with an innovative site layout that enabled it to deliver defensive, administrative, and commercial functions.
